Surveys start for the UK’s first T-pylons

National Grid have started to carry out ground investigation surveys in preparation for the construction of the first operational T-pylons in the UK.

The surveys will run along the route of the Hinkley Connection project between Bridgwater and Tarnock in the Mendip Hills and will be carried out by Balfour Beatty, their principal contractor for this work.

The surveys will continue until August 2019.

Construction on the new overhead line, including the innovative T-pylons is due to start in mid-2020. The pylon’s lower height and contemporary design is considered to have less of an impact on the landscape than traditional lattice pylons, whilst playing a vital role in supporting the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions.

The pylons are part of the 57 km Hinkley Connection project running between Bridgwater and Seabank near Avonmouth. The project is connecting new sources of power to be delivered efficiently, reliably, and safely.
